As hok's extend ed family inc ludes his wife  Radha ( Shabana  Azmi), his br other Jati n (Javed Jaffre y), their a iling mot her Biji ( Kushal Rekhi) a nd their m anservant Mundu (Ranj it Chowdhry),  all living un der the sa me roof.  Jatin,  at the insisten ce of Ashok and their mot her, Biji, a grees to mar ry the beautif ul Sita  (Nandita Da s) in an arrang ed marriage, although he i s actually in l ove with Julie  (Alice P oon), a Chinese-Ind ian. At f irst glance, y ou see a  happy middle -class fami ly going through th e normal paces of everyday l ife. However,  as the la yers ar e slowly pe eled back, we fi nd a simm ering caul dron of disco ntent within  the family, wi th almost ev ery family mem ber living a lie. Bo th marriage s in the famil y turn o ut to b e emotional ly empty, without lov e or passion. While Ashok is an  ascetic who ha s taken a v ow of celibac y, Jatin is a  handsome lad ies' m an who is s till openly  seeing J ulie eve n after his m arriage to  Sita. Ashok h as pledged h is total de votion to a religious  holy man, a swam i, in or der to pur ge his l ife of wor ldly desires an d tempt ations. Radha,  bound by her sense of du ty to he r husband, agrees to g o along w ith his wishes. As you can imagine, with  both hu sbands ignori ng thei r spouses&amp ;#39; e motional and sexual needs (albei t with rea sons that ar e totally  opposite  from each other ), it i s only a mat ter of time  before Radha an d Sita l ook to one anot her for comfor t and to satis fy their ow n passions. In this e nvironment, i t is only  natural that Sita  and Radha bec ome fast fr iends, and,  in time,  much more  than that.
