Haunted by the  memory of W alter Holderlin , a soldier he killed duri ng World War I, Fren ch musici an Paul Re nard (Philli ps Holmes) confess es to a pries t (Frank Sher idan), who grants him  absolution. Usi ng the addres s on a letter he found on the de ad man&amp ;#39;s body,  Paul then trav els to Germany  to find his fam ily. As anti- French sentim ent continu es to permeat e Germany,  Dr. Holderli n (Lionel  Barrymore) initial ly refuse s to welcome  Paul into hi s home, but chan ges his mi nd when h is son& amp;#39;s fia ncée Elsa i dentifies him  as the man wh o has bee n leaving flowe rs on Walter&am p;#39;s gra ve. Rathe r than reve al the real co nnection betwe en them, Pa ul tells the H olderlin family he was a friend of their so n, who atte nded the same musical  conservator y he did. Alt hough the hos tile town speople and  local gossips d isapprove,  the Holderli ns befriend Pau l, who find s himself fal ling in love wi th Elsa  (Nancy C arroll). Wh en she show s Paul h er former fiancé&#3 9;s bedro om, he becom es distraught  and tells her the truth. She convin ces him not to  confess to Walt er's p arents, w ho have embra ced him as the ir second son,  and Pa ul agrees to fo rego easin g his consci ence an d stays with his adop ted family. Dr . Holderlin p resents Walt er's v iolin t o Paul, who pl ays it whil e Elsa  accompanies him on the pia no.
